Surry troubles

NRC HAS SENT A SPECIAL INSPECTION TEAM TO DOMINION’s SURRY in Virginia to investigate a reactor shutdown earlier this week, the agency said in a statement June 11. Surry-1 shut down automatically June 8 when an electrical power supply failed and was still out of service early June 11. NRC said in its statement that “there were several complications associated with that shutdown, including loss of power to some components, loss of some instrumentation and control room indications, and a small fire in a cabinet in the control room.” The special inspection team “will review the circumstances surrounding the event [and] the licensee’s ensuing actions, evaluate the adequacy of the company’s past post-maintenance testing, and identify any generic issues for Surry or other nuclear plants,” the agency said. The special inspection is expected to take about a week and “the NRC will issue a report within 45 days” of its completion, the agency said. Dominion spokesman Richard Zuercher said in a June 11 statement that the company is “engaged in an extensive review of what caused the unit to
go off-line, including what were the circumstances that led to the automatic shutdown, how the equipment responded, how the operators responded to the transient, and what can we learn from this to improve our performance. It is in our best interest to share information with the NRC inspection team and have an open dialog with the regulator to ensure all issues have been thoroughly examined.”
