Most people want the Government to spend more money on power generated by wind, wave or solar sources, research revealed today.
A survey of more than 2,000 adults for environmental campaign group Greenpeace showed that around six out of 10 wanted more public money spent on renewable energy.
Two thirds of those polled said the disposal of radioactive waste should be agreed before new nuclear power stations are built.
Ben Ayliffe, senior energy campaigner for Greenpeace, said: “These results are clear for the new Government – whoever that may be. The people of Britain want to see more investment in clean technologies like wind, wave and solar power, rather than pouring even more public cash down the bottomless nuclear hole.
“Such an investment wouldn’t just be good for the economy, our energy security and our need to tackle climate change, it will also be a popular first move for the next Government to take.”
Simon Hughes, climate change and energy spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, said: “Today’s latest poll demonstrates what Liberal Democrats have been saying for a long time – people in Britain have simply not been fooled by the PR operation of the nuclear industry and their representatives in the Labour and Conservative Parties.
“Nuclear power is too expensive, dangerous and dirty. It is simply irresponsible for the Government to continue to pursue nuclear power when no solution has been found to dealing with the highly toxic radioactive waste that all nuclear power stations produce.”
