Fifteen Greenpeace activists display a banner reading “100 000 years of impact” next to 40 bins with nuclear waste symbols outside the Department of the Environment today. This is the run-up to a meeting in parliament on the 17th June which will decide whether the Swedish government’s controversial proposal for new nuclear power will go through. Nuclear power is unsafe and environmentally hazardous, and creates waste that is radioactive for 100 000 years but still lacks realistic storage solutions. Through investments in energy efficiency and renewable power, activists point out that nuclear power can be replaced in Sweden.
